A boyhood dream to cross the Pacific Ocean in a deep-sea canoe becomes the man’s most magnificent obsession.
In 1978, encouraged by the exploits and theories of Thor Heyerdahl, Geordie Tocher cut down a giant redwood tree, carved it into the ORENDA and after three tries and seven determined years, crossed the Pacific Ocean from Vancouver to Hawaii.
For 51 days, three very different men tossed about on the not-so peaceful Pacific Ocean in a 40-foot, 3 1/2 ton canoe.
For the neophyte sailor, it was a voyage of abject terror punctuated by momentary periods of boredom. For the now deceased navigator, no wave was too big. For Geordie, the captain of this crazy dream, it was nerves of steel as he dealt with the practical.
In between trying to navigate, making a hot cup of tea and bailing to keep his deep-sea canoe afloat, he shot 16mm colour footage. Contemporary filming and graphic novel style animation will round out the telling of this amazing against-all-odds adventure story.
